In the year she turned nine, her family was living in Louisiana which was where she took home in a regional talent show with an original version of Patsy Montana's "I Want to Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker had moved to Georgia when she reached the age of 15. Decker had begun writing songs and made regular trips to Nashville in search of recording deals. The representative of the label that was independent Big Yellow Dog Records heard her when she was 17 and began selling her songs to various labels. Decker was 17 when she snagged the attention of a representative from Big Yellow Dog Records, who started selling her tracks to label and artist. Decker struggled with her label to have more control of her music following two previous singles did not succeed. Her next release, Boys in the Summer was more influenced by country music. Decker's second album announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy or Sweet American Dreams was shelved by Mercury and after three singles fared poorly in the charts of country music. Decker was let go of her contract.
